Promises Backed by His Name
In Psalm 138:2, David declares,
“I face your Temple as I worship, giving thanks to you for all your loving-kindness and your faithfulness, for your promises are backed by all the honour of your name.”
David anchors his worship not in circumstances, but in the character of God. God’s promises are trustworthy because God himself is trustworthy.
Throughout September we will reflect on the promises of God. D. L. Moody once described the rhythm of faithful living this way: “God makes a promise; Faith believes it; Hope anticipates it; and Patience quietly awaits it.” Yet that waiting can be difficult. How do we trust promises that sometimes seem slow in being fulfilled?
Frederick Buechner offers a helpful perspective. He reminds us that God’s promises are not static guarantees of comfort or ease. They are living, relational assurances that God is present with us—especially in the wilderness places of grief, uncertainty, and ordinary life. God’s promises do not remove us from darkness; they accompany us through it, transforming commands into grace and despair into hope.
At the heart of Psalm 138 is the word hesed—God’s loving-kindness. This rich Hebrew term speaks of steadfast, covenant-keeping love: love that acts, endures, and remains faithful even when tested. Hesed is not merely how God feels about us; it is how God commits himself to us. His promises are backed by his name, his honour, and his unchanging character.

Imagine a parent walking with a child through a dark tunnel. The child may be afraid, but the parent does not shout directions from the other side. Instead, they hold the child’s hand and walk alongside them, step by step. The promise is not, “You won’t be afraid,” but, “I am with you.” That is the nature of God’s promises.
Psalm 138 invites us to face God in worship, not because everything is resolved, but because his faithful love never wavers.

This week, choose one promise of God and reflect on it daily. Ask not only what God promises, but how that promise reveals his loving-kindness in your current circumstances.

Faithful God, we thank you for your hesed—your steadfast love that never lets us go. Help us to trust your promises, to hope in your faithfulness, and to wait patiently for your purposes to unfold. Walk with us through every wilderness, and teach us to worship you with grateful hearts. Amen.
