My Boat Is So Little
I recall a children’s chorus learned in my Sunday School days:
My boat is so little, the ocean so large,
But Jesus has given his hand.
When he takes the helm, I know that one day,
I’ll rest in that beautiful land.
Its simple words hold a deep truth: life can feel overwhelming, but we are not alone in the storm.
Psalm 107:23–30, often called the Sailors’ Psalm, echoes this theme with vivid imagery. It tells of seafarers who set out bravely, only to find themselves caught in a furious, God-sent storm. Their ships are lifted high on towering waves, then plunged into the depths. Courage melts away. They reel and stagger, “at their wits’ end.” Only then do they cry out to the Lord.
And the Lord responds.
The psalm says God “made the storm be still; the waves of the sea were hushed.” He guides them safely to their desired haven. The God who commands the storm is also the God who calms it.
This scene is one of four rescue stories in Psalm 107, each calling God’s people to give thanks for his steadfast love. Whether lost in the desert, trapped in darkness, sick through rebellion, or overwhelmed at sea, the pattern is the same: distress, a cry to the Lord, and gracious deliverance.

Picture a small child on a windswept beach, clutching a toy boat. A sudden wave knocks it sideways, and panic sets in. Then a steady hand reaches down, lifts the boat, and sets it straight again. The waves are still there—but the boat is secure. That is what God does for us.
Psalm 107 is often read as a metaphor for life’s chaos. There are seasons when our own confidence fails, when circumstances toss us about and we don’t know how to steady ourselves. The psalm does not deny the storm—but it insists that God is present within it.
Challenge:
What storm are you navigating right now? Instead of trying to manage it alone, bring it honestly before God today. Cry out—and trust him with the helm.
Prayer:
Faithful God, when our courage fails and the waves feel too strong, remind us that you are Lord of the storm. Calm our hearts, guide our course, and lead us safely to the haven you have prepared for us. We place our lives into your steady hands. Amen.
