Washed and Renewed
Titus 3:5 "He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit." (Titus 3:5, NIV)
Maya had a favourite wool scarf—soft, woven with deep blues and greys, a gift from her grandmother. One winter day, she accidentally spilled dark coffee across its front. She tried spot-cleaning it herself, scrubbing hard with soap and water, but the stain only spread and set. Discouraged, she almost threw it away.
Instead, she took it to a professional cleaner who specialised in delicate fabrics. Using gentle, specially formulated solutions and careful techniques, he didn’t just remove the stain—he restored the scarf to its original texture and colour, making it feel like new again. Maya realised she couldn’t fix it on her own; she needed someone with the right tools and mercy to give it new life.
Just as Maya couldn’t save her scarf by her own efforts, we can’t earn God’s favour through good works or trying to “clean up” our lives. Titus 3:5 reminds us that salvation comes solely from His mercy. Through baptism and the work of the Holy Spirit, we are not just “cleaned up”—we are reborn and renewed, transformed from the inside out. Our past stains are washed away, and we are given a fresh start, woven into something beautiful for His purpose.
CHALLENGE
This week, identify one area of your life where you’ve been trying to “scrub away” imperfections on your own. Write it down, then symbolically “wash” it by placing the paper under running water (or simply fold it and pray over it). Surrender that burden to God and ask Him to bring renewal to that part of your heart.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, thank You that You save us not because we deserve it, but because of Your great mercy. Thank You for washing away our sin and renewing us by Your Holy Spirit. Help us to trust in Your transforming work rather than our own efforts. Fill us with Your fresh life today, that we may reflect Your love to the world around us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
