As we enter October our theme centres on ‘Unshakable Foundation’ through establishing our lives on the character and nature of God.
We start with the Rock: Why Jesus Is the Only Firm Foundation
Bible Reading
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.”
— Matthew 7:24
Reflection
Throughout Scripture, “the Rock” is a powerful image of God’s strength, faithfulness, and reliability. In Deuteronomy and the Psalms, God is praised as the Rock who shelters, saves, and never fails. This image reaches its fulfilment in the New Testament, where Christ himself is revealed as that same Rock — the unshakable foundation on which life and faith must be built.
At the close of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus draws a sharp contrast between two builders. Both hear his words. Both build a house. Both face storms. The difference is not in belief or intention, but in obedience. The wise builder puts Jesus’ teaching into practice and builds on rock; the foolish builder hears but does not act, choosing sand instead. When the storms come — hardship, temptation, suffering, or final judgment — only one foundation holds.
Jesus is not merely offering good advice; he is offering himself. To build on the Rock is to root our lives in Christ’s teaching, character, and grace. Any other foundation — our own wisdom, success, morality, or effort — may appear solid for a time, but ultimately proves unstable. Without Christ, the collapse is not minor but, as Jesus warns, “a mighty crash.”
Illustration
A coastal house may look beautiful built on sand, especially in calm weather. But engineers know that without deep foundations anchored into rock, it cannot survive the storm surge. In the same way, a life can appear strong on the surface, yet crumble when tested if it is not anchored in Christ.
Challenge
Ask yourself today: What am I really building my life on?
Choose one teaching of Jesus you know but struggle to live out — forgiveness, generosity, trust — and take one concrete step to practise it this week.
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ,
you are the Rock of my salvation.
Forgive me for the times I have built on sand —
on my own strength, plans, or understanding.
Teach me not only to hear your words,
but to live them.
Anchor my life in you,
so that when the storms come,
I will stand firm in faith and hope.
Amen.
