All Are Welcome

At St Nicholas Methodist you will find a friendly welcome where we help each other to worship God, and strive to live more like Christ in service beyond the walls of our church building. We are part of the Exeter Coast and Country Circuit.

Daily Devotions

For the month of November we are going to take our thinking from John Wesley’s quotations based on his studies of scripture.

Grace for All

“All need to be saved.” — John Wesley

John Wesley’s understanding of salvation was wonderfully expansive. For him, being saved was never just about securing a place in heaven someday. It was a living, present, transforming work of God’s grace. Salvation begins with justification—the pardon of sin—but continues in sanctification, the steady reshaping of our hearts into the likeness of Christ. It is the journey of the “heart strangely warmed,” moving from bondage into freedom, from self-centredness into perfect love.

Wesley rooted this conviction firmly in Scripture: “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Notice the word all. Not some. Not only the obviously broken. Not just those outside the church. All of us.

Illustration

A lifeboat crew does not head out only for the weakest swimmers. When the distress call comes, the assumption is simple: anyone in the water needs saving. The strongest swimmer may last longer, but eventually exhaustion comes. Pride can be just as dangerous as panic.

So it is with grace. The gospel is not offered because we are especially good, but because we are honestly needy. The doorway into God’s mercy is low enough that only the humble can enter.

Challenge

Where might pride still whisper that you are managing well enough on your own? This week, practise holy honesty. Bring before God not only your obvious failings but also your quiet self-reliance. Receive again the grace that is for all—including you.

As Charles Wesley wrote in And Can It Be That I Should Gain:

“Amazing love! how can it be

That thou, my God, shouldst die for me?”

Prayer

Gracious God,

we confess that we all fall short of your glory.

Thank you that your grace reaches every one of us.

Pardon what is past,

renew what is present,

and shape us more fully into the likeness of Christ.

Warm our hearts again with your saving love,

that we may live in humble gratitude and holy joy.

Amen.
