You Will Receive the Lord’s Protection
Psalm 34:7
“We are all familiar with the promise printed on a Bank of England note: ‘I promise to pay the bearer on demand the sum of…’ It is a guarantee backed by authority, reputation, and trust. We accept it without hesitation. Yet Scripture offers us promises backed not by a human institution, but by the living God.
As we begin this series reflecting on God’s “You will receive” promises, we start with reassurance at the very heart of our daily fears and uncertainties: protection.
Psalm 34:7 declares, “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.” This is not a promise that nothing will ever go wrong. David wrote these words while on the run, vulnerable and afraid. God’s protection does not always remove danger, but it surrounds us within it. The image is of a heavenly guard, a protective presence pitched firmly around God’s people.
God’s protection is personal and active. The angel of the Lord does not merely watch from a distance; he encamps—stays, dwells, remains. When we feel exposed, overwhelmed, or unsure of what lies ahead, God promises His nearness, His defence, and His deliverance in ways seen and unseen.
Just as we trust the value of a banknote because of who stands behind it, so we are invited to trust God’s promise of protection because of who He is: faithful, powerful, and loving. His promise holds true, even when circumstances suggest otherwise.
Illustration / Challenge
Place a coin or note in your hand today. Reflect on how easily you trust its value. Then ask yourself: Do I trust God’s promise of protection with the same confidence?
This week, whenever you feel anxious or unsafe, quietly repeat Psalm 34:7 and imagine God’s presence encamped around you.
Prayer
Lord God,
Thank you for Your promise of protection.
When I feel vulnerable or afraid, remind me that You are near.
Help me to trust Your promises more than my fears,
And to rest in the assurance of Your loving care.
Encamp around me today, O Lord,
And deliver me according to Your will.
Amen.
