Sent from the Shore
We began our August devotional journey by the seashore, where Jesus first called fishermen to leave their nets and follow him. Today we come full circle, back on a beach again, where the risen Jesus meets Peter—not to call him for the first time, but to restore him for the future.
In John 21:15–17, after breakfast by the Sea of Galilee, Jesus asks Peter three times, “Do you love me?” Each question echoes Peter’s three denials on the night of Jesus’ arrest. The repetition is painful. John tells us Peter is grieved—but he does not turn away. Each time he answers honestly: “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” And each time Jesus responds with a commission: “Feed my lambs… Take care of my sheep.”
There is a gentle but profound detail hidden in the Greek. Jesus first asks if Peter loves him with agape—self-giving, sacrificial love. Peter replies with phileo—the love of friendship and affection. He cannot yet claim the highest form of devotion. The third time, Jesus lowers his question and asks Peter for phileo love. Jesus meets Peter where he truly is, not where he wishes he were.

Imagine a teacher handing back an exam paper marked with red corrections. But instead of scolding, the teacher sits beside the student and says, “Let’s work through this together—and then I’ll trust you to help someone else learn.” That is what Jesus does on the shore. He does not erase Peter’s failure; he transforms it into a calling.
This passage reminds us that Jesus restores before he sends, forgives before he commissions, and asks not for perfection but honesty. Our love may feel fragile, hesitant, or bruised—but it is enough for Jesus to use.

Challenge:
Today, hear Jesus asking you, “Do you love me?” Answer honestly—and then look for one small way to “feed his sheep” through kindness, service, or encouragement.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, you know our failures and our fears. You meet us where we are and still call us to serve. Take our imperfect love and use it for your purposes. Restore us again, and send us out from the shore. Amen.
