The River That Carries Us Forward
As a teenager, I spent many summer holidays helping on my grandfather’s pleasure craft, travelling across Plymouth Sound and up the River Tamar. Heading upstream required the full power of the engine. Every bend demanded effort, concentration, and fuel. But turning back towards the sea was different. We could ease off the throttle and let the river itself carry us forward. The same water that resisted us on the way up became our strength on the way home.
Psalm 1:1–3 uses a powerful image to describe a life shaped by God: “They are like a tree planted by streams of water.” The psalm contrasts two ways of living — one guided by passing opinions and human wisdom, the other rooted deeply in God’s ways. The flourishing life is not one driven by frantic effort, but one sustained by a constant, reliable source.
The “streams of water” speak of God’s Word and the quiet, faithful work of the Holy Spirit. This tree does not rely on occasional showers, but is planted where life-giving water flows continually. Even in times of heat, drought, or pressure, it remains fruitful. Strength comes not from striving harder, but from staying connected.
Roots matter. A shallow root system cannot draw deeply from the river. Likewise, our spiritual stability depends on regular, honest engagement with Scripture — not just reading, but allowing God’s Word to shape our thinking, choices, and direction. Over time, the river does its work. It carries us forward, often more than we realise.
Challenge
Where are you expending unnecessary effort, trying to push against the current in your own strength? This week, intentionally place yourself by the “river” — set aside time to read, ponder, and pray Scripture slowly. Ask God what it means to trust the flow rather than fight it.

Living God,
Plant us beside your life-giving river.
When we strive in our own strength, teach us to rest in you.
Sink our roots deep into your Word and Spirit,
that we may stand firm, bear fruit in every season,
and be carried forward by your grace.
