God Who Goes Before Us
When a ship enters an unfamiliar waterway or harbour, the captain hands control to a local pilot who knows the hidden currents and hazards. When explorers venture into unknown territory, they rely on a guide who has walked the terrain before. In our journey of faith, it is God who goes ahead of us as our pilot and guide.
Scripture captures this beautifully in Deuteronomy 31:8:
“The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
To say that “God goes before us” is to trust that God leads, prepares the way, and remains present with us. God is not surprised by what lies ahead. He has already been there. He knows the bends in the river and the steep places on the road, and He promises His presence so that fear does not have the final word.
Isaiah reminds us that God goes ahead to “level the mountains” (Isaiah 45:2), removing obstacles we cannot shift ourselves. At the same time, God is also our rear guard (Isaiah 52:12), protecting what we leave behind—the regrets, the wounds, the unfinished chapters. We are held on every side.

Imagine walking through thick fog on a narrow path. You cannot see far ahead, but you trust the footsteps of someone just in front of you. You step where they step, believing the path is safe because they have already tested it. Faith is often like that—moving forward not with full clarity, but with confidence in the One who leads.
In Christ, God goes before us into illness, change, grief, calling, and uncertainty. Jesus has already walked the road of suffering and resurrection, and He walks with us still. This gives us courage to take the next step, even when the destination is unclear.
Challenge
Identify one area of your life where you feel uncertain or hesitant. This week, consciously entrust it to God in prayer, and take one small step forward, trusting that God has already gone ahead of you.
Prayer
God who goes before us, thank you that we never walk alone. When the way feels unclear or frightening, help us to trust your leading and your protection. Give us courage to step forward in faith, knowing that you are already there. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
