Unseen Footprints, Faithful Presence
One of the most beloved Christian poems of the last century is Footprints by Margaret Fishback Powers. In it, a believer looks back over life and notices that during the hardest seasons there is only one set of footprints. The painful assumption is that God had abandoned them—but the truth is far more tender: “It was then that I carried you.” What felt like absence was, in fact, the deepest presence.
Psalm 77 offers a strikingly similar insight, rooted not in poetry but in Israel’s lived experience:
“Your way was through the sea, your path through the great waters, yet your footprints were unseen.” (Psalm 77:19)
The psalmist is reflecting on the Exodus—on that terrifying, miraculous moment when God led His people through the Red Sea. God’s way was clear only in hindsight. In the moment, there were no visible footprints, no reassuring signs, only towering walls of water and a long, frightening path ahead.
This psalm is born out of distress. Earlier verses are full of anguish and questions, yet the tone changes as the psalmist deliberately remembers God’s mighty acts. The turning point comes not because circumstances improve, but because memory reshapes faith. The unseen God is recalled as the faithful Deliverer.
The contrast is important. God is powerfully present, yet mysteriously hidden. He is leading, yet His path is not obvious. Psalm 77 reminds us that God often works most deeply in ways we cannot trace. His presence is not always felt, but it is always faithful.

Imagine walking across wet sand by the sea at dawn. The tide comes in quietly, erasing your footprints behind you. The path you took disappears, but it does not mean you never walked there. In the same way, God’s work in our lives is often washed from view by time, pain, or confusion—but it was real, and it mattered.

This week, reflect on a difficult season where God’s presence felt hidden. Ask yourself: Where might God have been carrying me, even when I couldn’t see His footprints? Write down one way you can choose trust over fear today.
Prayer:
Faithful God, when Your way feels hidden and Your presence unclear, help us to trust Your heart. Teach us to remember Your mighty acts and to believe that even unseen, You are leading us safely through. Carry us when we are weak, and deepen our faith in Your unfailing love.
