Perfect Love
“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear.” (1 John 4:18, NIV)
Quote: “By perfection I mean… love of God and neighbour.” — John Wesley
Love in the Little Things
We sometimes imagine that Christian perfection means getting everything right: never losing our temper, making mistakes or having doubts. Yet John Wesley understood perfection differently. It is not about being flawless, but allowing God’s love to shape our lives until love guides all we do.
Charles Wesley expresses this longing beautifully in his hymn Love Divine, All Loves Excelling, praying that Christ would “Fix in us thy humble dwelling.” Perfect love is not something we achieve through willpower alone; it is God’s work within us, transforming us into the likeness of Jesus.
Imagine a busy hospital ward. An elderly patient has become irritable and demanding. The staff are tired, and everyone has too much to do. One nurse, however, stops beside his bed, takes his hand and asks how he really feels. She cannot cure his illness or remove his difficulties, but she offers something precious: the assurance that he matters.
This is love made visible. It is neither spectacular nor necessarily noticed by others, yet it reflects the heart of Christ.
John reminds us that perfect love drives out fear. When we know ourselves to be loved by God, we become freer to love others without fear of rejection or a constant need for recognition. People become more than interruptions to our plans; they become neighbours whom God calls us to love.
Christian maturity is not flawlessness but love fully alive. We will still make mistakes, but we can grow in patience, kindness, forgiveness and compassion.
Today’s Challenge
Where can you practise intentional love today? Could you listen without interrupting, encourage someone who feels overlooked, forgive an old hurt or show kindness to someone difficult to love?
Choose one small act of love and do it deliberately, asking God to work through you.
Prayer
Loving God, fill me with Your perfect love. Free me from fear, pride and selfishness. Teach me to love You wholeheartedly and my neighbour as myself. May Christ dwell in me and His love shine through my ordinary actions today. Amen.
