All Are Welcome

At St Nicholas Methodist you will find a friendly welcome where we help each other to worship God, and strive to live more like Christ in service beyond the walls of our church building. We are part of the Exeter Coast and Country Circuit.

Power of Prayer

Quote: “God does nothing but in answer to prayer.” — John Wesley

Scripture: James 5:16 — “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

Prayer is one of the greatest gifts God has given us. It is not simply a religious exercise or a last resort when everything else has failed. Prayer is an invitation to participate in God’s work in the world. Through prayer, we bring our concerns, our hopes, our communities and our loved ones into God’s presence, trusting that he hears us and works in ways we cannot always see.

John Wesley understood the importance of prayer. His words remind us that prayer is not a passive activity but an expression of our dependence upon God. We may not always see immediate answers, and sometimes God’s response may be different from what we expected. Yet we can continue to pray with faith, trusting in God’s wisdom, love and purposes.

Imagine a lighthouse keeper faithfully tending a lamp through the night. Ships may pass safely in the darkness without the keeper ever knowing their names or hearing their thanks. The keeper simply continues to shine the light, knowing that it matters.

Our prayers can be like that lighthouse. We may quietly pray for a struggling neighbour, a family facing difficulties, a church seeking direction or a world longing for peace. We might never discover the difference our prayers have made, but that does not mean they are wasted. God can work through our faithful prayers in ways beyond our understanding.

Never underestimate the power of a whispered prayer, a name spoken before God or a moment spent interceding for someone in need.

Challenge

Today, choose one person or situation that needs God’s help. Set aside five quiet minutes to pray specifically for them. Do not worry about finding perfect words. Simply bring them before God and trust him to work. Continue praying, even if you cannot yet see an answer.

Prayer

Loving Father, thank you for the privilege of prayer. Forgive me when I underestimate its power or become discouraged when answers seem slow. Teach me to pray with faith and perseverance, trusting your wisdom and love. Help me to remember those who need your comfort, healing and guidance. Use my prayers, however small they may seem, to accomplish your purposes in the world. May I never cease to bring others before you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
