All Are Welcome

At St Nicholas Methodist you will find a friendly welcome where we help each other to worship God, and strive to live more like Christ in service beyond the walls of our church building. We are part of the Exeter Coast and Country Circuit.

Finding Peace in a God Who Never Changes

Martin Luther King Jr. often paraphrased the words of John Newton when reflecting on personal growth:

“I may not be the man I want to be; I may not be the man I ought to be; I may not be the man I could be; but praise God, I am not the man I used to be.”

Those words resonate because they tell the truth about us. We are always in process — learning, repenting, growing, sometimes stumbling. Our lives are shaped by change. Yet Scripture points us to a deeper truth that anchors all our becoming.

Hebrews 13:8 reminds us: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” While we change, Christ does not. His love does not weaken. His holiness does not shift. His saving purpose remains complete and sure. He does not become more compassionate or less just; all that he is, he always has been and always will be.

Illustration:

Human nature is like a weather vane, constantly turning with the slightest breeze of opinion, crisis, or emotion — one moment pointing toward zeal, the next toward despair. As Scripture says, we are often “tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind” (Ephesians 4:14). Jesus, however, is the North Star: fixed, reliable, and unmoved. Just as sailors in a storm learned not to trust the spinning vane on their own mast but to steer by the one star that never shifted, so we are called to lift our eyes from our changing feelings and circumstances and set our course by Christ, whose faithfulness the storms of life cannot touch.

In a culture of uncertainty and rapid change, Christ’s unchanging nature becomes a deep source of peace. Because he is faithful, we can trust him. Because he is constant, we can be steadfast — holding firmly to his teaching and living out his love day by day.

Challenge:

Where do you feel tossed about by change or uncertainty right now? Pause today and deliberately entrust that situation to the unchanging Christ, choosing trust over anxiety.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus,

You are faithful in every season.

When everything around us shifts and changes,

help us to rest in your unchanging love.

Strengthen our faith, steady our hearts,

and lead us in your way,

today and forever.

Amen.
