All Are Welcome

At St Nicholas Methodist you will find a friendly welcome where we help each other to worship God, and strive to live more like Christ in service beyond the walls of our church building. We are part of the Exeter Coast and Country Circuit.

Wisdom vs. Opinion: Building Your Life on Truth, Not Trends

We live in a world full of strong opinions. What people praise today may be rejected tomorrow. Culture often tells us to “live your truth,” but the Bible points us to something much more reliable—God’s wisdom.

In Scripture, wisdom is not just about being clever. It means learning how to live God’s way each day. Proverbs 1:7 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” In other words, real wisdom starts when we honour God and take His Word seriously.

Jesus prayed in John 17:17, “Your word is truth.” God’s truth does not change with moods, trends, or popular opinion. That is why Jesus said the wise person is like someone who builds a house on rock (Matthew 7:24–27). Storms will come—but a life built on God’s truth will stand firm.

The danger of “personal truth” is that our feelings can lead us the wrong way. Proverbs 16:25 warns, “There is a way that seems right to a person, but in the end it leads to death.” Something can feel right and still be wrong.

Worldly wisdom often says, “Do what makes you happy” or “Go with the crowd.” Godly wisdom asks different questions: Does this please God? Will this help me grow in Christ? Will this matter in eternity? Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 3:19–20 that what the world calls wise may actually be foolish in God’s eyes.

Following God’s truth will not always be popular. But it will always be safe and strong.

Think about using a compass instead of following footprints in the sand. Footprints can look clear, but the tide soon washes them away. A compass, however, always points the right way.

God’s Word is like that compass in a confusing world.

Challenge

This week, notice one area where outside voices are shaping your thinking.

Pause and ask: What does God’s Word say?

Take one small step to follow His wisdom instead of the crowd.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

In a noisy world, help me listen to your truth.

Give me wisdom that begins with honouring you.

When I am tempted to follow my feelings or the crowd,

guide me back to your Word.

Build my life on your solid foundation.

Amen.
