You Will Receive Honour
Proverbs 22:4
In our world, honour is often confused with popularity, success, or being noticed. Yet Scripture offers a deeper, richer understanding. Proverbs 22:4 tells us: “Humility is the fear of the LORD; its wages are riches and honour and life.”
The Hebrew word most often translated as “honour” is kavod, which literally means weighty or heavy. Honour, in God’s eyes, is not about empty applause or polite recognition; it is about substance. Something that carries weight matters. It has value, depth, and significance. Kavod is also translated as glory, reminding us that true honour reflects God’s own character.
This proverb links honour not to striving, but to humility and the fear of the LORD. Biblical humility is not self-contempt, but a realistic understanding of who we are before God—dependent, grateful, and teachable. To fear the LORD is to live with reverence, placing God at the centre and ordering our lives around His will rather than our own ego.
The promise is striking: riches, honour, and life. These are not merely material rewards, but signs of a life aligned with God—spiritual vitality, purpose, and a depth of character that others recognise. Honour, in this sense, is something God bestows, not something we demand. It grows quietly in those who walk faithfully, often unnoticed at first, but carrying great weight in God’s kingdom.
In a culture that prizes self-promotion, Proverbs 22:4 invites us to trust a different economy—one where lowering ourselves before God leads to a life of lasting significance.
Illustration / Challenge
Hold a small object in one hand and a heavier one in the other. The heavier object naturally demands more attention. Ask yourself: What gives weight to my life—my achievements, or my humility before God?
This week, practise one hidden act of humility: serve without recognition, listen without correcting, or give thanks instead of taking credit.
Prayer
Lord God,
Teach me true humility and a reverent fear of You.
Strip away my pride and my need for approval.
Help me to live a life that carries weight in Your kingdom—
Rich in faith, honourable in character, and alive in Your Spirit.
May the honour I receive always point back to You.
