Resting in the Finished Work
“And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” Hebrews 10:10
Stability Found in the Cross
We live in a culture driven by “more”: more effort, more improvement, more proof that we are worthy. Even our faith can quietly become exhausting, as if God’s pleasure depends on how well we perform. Into that weary striving, Hebrews 10:10 speaks a steady, liberating truth: the work is finished.
Under the Old Covenant, priests stood day after day, offering the same sacrifices again and again. Their posture said everything—the work was never complete. Sin was covered, but not finally dealt with. There was no chair in the sanctuary, because there was no end to the labour.
Jesus changed everything. By offering himself once for all, he accomplished what endless sacrifices never could. After the cross, he sat down at the right hand of God. His sitting is a declaration: nothing more needs to be added. No further payment is required.
When Jesus cried, “It is finished,” he did not mean, “I have done my part; now you must do yours.” He meant the debt was fully paid. Hebrews does not say we might become holy if we try hard enough. It says we have been made holy through Christ’s sacrifice. Our stability is not found in our consistency, but in his completed work.

Imagine trying to balance on a moving treadmill—you must keep running just to avoid falling. Many of us treat faith like that: stop striving, and we fear we will lose everything. The gospel invites us to step off the treadmill and sit down on solid ground. Christ has already done the running. We are invited to rest.
Challenge
Where are you still striving to earn what Christ has already given? This week, notice moments when guilt, fear, or pressure push you to “do more” to be acceptable to God. Gently remind yourself: I am resting in what Jesus has finished.
Prayer
Gracious God,
Thank you that through Jesus, the work is complete.
Free me from striving to earn what you have already given.
Teach me to rest in your grace,
to trust your finished work,
and to live each day from gratitude, not fear.
May my life flow from your love, not my effort.
Amen.
