Walk Humbly with God (Dependence)
Micah’s well-known words end not with a command to achieve, but an invitation to walk:
“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.”
(Micah 6:8, NIV)
Before leaving this verse, we must linger on what it means to walk humbly with God. Biblical humility is not about thinking less of ourselves, but about thinking of ourselves rightly. It is recognising that everything we are and have is a gift of grace, not the result of our own strength or self-sufficiency.
To walk humbly with God is to live with a dependent heart—aware of our limitations and confident in God’s faithfulness. It is a daily, intentional closeness with the Lord, shaped by prayer, obedience, and a willingness to listen. Humility keeps us teachable, repentant when we stumble, and grateful when we succeed.
Illustration:
Walking with someone requires matching their pace. If we rush ahead, we walk alone. If we lag behind, we lose connection. Walking humbly with God means slowing our lives enough to stay in step with him—allowing his wisdom, rather than our impulses, to set the rhythm.
This humble walk also shapes how we relate to others. When we know our worth comes from God, we are freed from the need to prove ourselves. Humility becomes an internal posture of serving rather than being served, expressing itself through kindness, fairness, and mercy. It is finding quiet joy in lifting others up, rather than drawing attention to ourselves.
Walking humbly also means acknowledging our ongoing need for God. It resists the illusion of self-made faith and chooses dependence instead. Where we have wandered, humility leads us back through repentance. Where we are uncertain, it teaches us to trust.
In essence, to walk humbly with God is to align our hearts and actions with his will—living attentively before him and extending his justice and love into the world.
Challenge:
Each morning this week, consciously place your day in God’s hands. Ask, Where do I need to rely on you rather than myself today? Then choose one act of quiet service that reflects that dependence.

Gracious God,
Teach us to walk closely with you,
Aware of our need and grateful for your grace.
Slow our steps, soften our hearts,
And shape our lives to reflect your love.
May our humility draw us nearer to you
And open our hands to serve others.
