God’s Vessels
The apostle Paul gives us a striking image of our place in God’s work:
“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.”
(2 Corinthians 4:7, NIV)
We, as believers, are jars of clay—fragile, ordinary, and temporary. Yet within us resides something extraordinary: the treasure of God’s presence, his power, and the message of the gospel. The contrast is deliberate. God uses ordinary, imperfect vessels to display his extraordinary glory. This reminds us that the supreme power belongs not to us, but to him.
Just as a potter shapes clay, God shapes us. Every curve, every imperfection, even the cracks in our lives, are carefully crafted for a purpose. In ancient times, jars of clay often held precious scrolls or sacred documents, offering protection even if only temporary. Similarly, God uses us to contain and carry his truth in the world, allowing others to see his beauty through our lives.
Illustration:
Imagine a cracked jar on a shelf. At first glance, it seems useless. Yet the potter fills it with light. The cracks allow the light to spill out in a unique way, shining more beautifully than a perfect jar ever could. Our weaknesses, limitations, and trials can become channels through which God’s glory is displayed.
Being God’s vessel also teaches dependence. A jar cannot shape itself or choose its contents. Likewise, we must yield to God’s shaping, trusting him to fill and use us for his purposes. Each jar of clay is unique, reflecting the potter’s artistry in different ways, just as every believer contributes differently to God’s kingdom.
Challenge:
This week, identify one area of weakness, imperfection, or limitation in your life. Instead of hiding it, invite God to use it to display his power or love to someone else. Notice how he can turn what feels fragile into something beautiful.

Heavenly Potter,
Thank you for shaping us as your vessels,
Fragile yet filled with your treasure.
Help us surrender to your hands,
Trust your design, and let your light shine through our cracks.
May our lives reflect your glory,
And point others to your power and love.
