Ethical Living: Choosing the Right Way
Ethical living is about doing the right thing—even when it is unpopular, inconvenient, or costly. In a world where shortcuts are often rewarded and integrity can feel optional, Scripture calls us to a deeper, steadier path.
Micah 6:8 speaks directly into this tension:
“He has told you, mortals, what is good in His sight. What else does the Eternal ask of you
But to live justly and to love kindness and to walk with your True God in all humility?”

From a Christian perspective, ethics are not merely about rule-keeping. They flow from relationship—loving God and loving our neighbour. Ethical living means allowing Scripture to shape our choices, imitating Christ in our attitudes and actions, and seeking to glorify God in all we do. It is about forming a Christ-like character marked by humility, compassion, and integrity, especially in the grey areas of a complex world.
Jesus distilled ethical living to its essence: love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and love your neighbour as yourself. To live this way, we can do no better than to imitate Christ—asking not only “What is allowed?” but “What reflects Jesus here?”

Imagine a compass rather than a rulebook. Rules can tell you what not to do, but a compass keeps you oriented when the path is unclear. Ethical discipleship is learning to let Christ be our true north, guiding decisions at work, in relationships, and behind closed doors—where no one else sees.
Ethical discipleship is, as one writer described it, “a long obedience in the same direction.” It is a daily, counter-cultural choice to place Christ’s teaching above personal comfort or social approval. Dallas Willard captured this beautifully: “Discipleship is the process of becoming who Jesus would be if he were you.” That is the goal—not perfection, but faithful formation.
Challenge:
This week, notice one situation where convenience tempts you to compromise. Pause and ask: What would love, integrity, and humility look like here? Then choose the Christ-shaped response.

Faithful God,
Shape our hearts to love what you love
And give us courage to live with integrity when it costs us.
Form in us the character of Christ,
So that our actions reflect our faith,
And our lives quietly point others to you.
