All Are Welcome

At St Nicholas Methodist you will find a friendly welcome where we help each other to worship God, and strive to live more like Christ in service beyond the walls of our church building. We are part of the Exeter Coast and Country Circuit.

Drawn to the Water’s Edge

Psalm 42:1

There are moments when life feels loud, crowded, and draining. Schedules press in. Responsibilities pile up. Our inner reserves run low. In such times, many of us feel a quiet pull toward water — a river path, a stream, a shoreline — somewhere we can breathe again. Creation itself seems to call us to stillness.

The psalmist gives language to that inner pull: “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.” This is not polite interest. It is urgent desire. A deer pants because it must drink to live. The image is one of necessity, not convenience. God is not presented as an optional comfort but as essential refreshment.

Spiritual longing is not weakness — it is awareness. It is the soul recognising what truly sustains it. Gandhi once wrote, “Prayer is not asking. It is a longing of the soul.” True prayer often begins not with many words but with honest thirst. Sometimes the most faithful prayer is simply turning our attention toward God and admitting, “I need you.”

Seasons of dryness are not signs of failure; they are often invitations. Hunger draws us to the table. Thirst draws us to the stream. Stillness allows longing to grow clearer and more focused. When we stop numbing our restlessness with noise, we begin to recognise it as desire for God.

A hiker once ignored his thirst signals to finish a trail quickly. By the end, he was dizzy and weak — not because water was unavailable, but because he delayed drinking. He later said, “The stream was there the whole time — I just wouldn’t stop long enough.” God’s presence is often like that: near, available, waiting for us to pause.

Challenge

Create a five-minute “water pause” each day this week. Sit quietly with a glass of water. Sip slowly. With each sip pray, “Lord, you are my life.” Notice what your soul has been craving beneath the surface noise.

Prayer

Living God, my soul thirsts for you more than I realise. Slow me down enough to notice my deeper hunger. Draw me to your presence like a deer to flowing streams. Teach me to pray with honesty, stillness, and desire. Refresh my heart and restore my strength. Amen.
