A Season to Breathe

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

(Matthew 11:28)

For many families and school communities, today marks the beginning of the summer holidays. Bags are dropped, alarms are silenced, and the steady rhythm of term-time life finally pauses. After weeks of deadlines, lessons, meetings, and constant motion, there is a collective exhale.

God understands the need for seasons. In the Bible, rest is not an afterthought; it is woven into creation itself. God rested on the seventh day, not because He was tired, but to set a pattern for us — a reminder that life is more than productivity and performance.

The start of the holidays offers us a gentle invitation: to slow down, to notice God again, and to remember that our worth is not measured by how much we do. For some, this season will be joyful and full; for others, it may feel unsettling, lonely, or tiring in a different way. Yet Jesus’ words remain the same: “Come to me.”

Rest, in God’s eyes, is not simply stopping work. It is returning to trust. It is allowing our hearts to settle and our souls to be restored. In the quieter days ahead — whether filled with trips, childcare, or simple routines — God meets us not only in activity, but in stillness.

This holiday season can become sacred space: moments to pray without rushing, to notice beauty, to listen more carefully, and to be present with one another. Even small pauses — a cup of tea in the garden, a shared meal, a walk without an agenda — can become places where God gently renews us.

As this new season begins, we are reminded that rest is not a reward for hard work, but a gift from a loving God.

Reflection:

What would it look like for you to truly rest — not just physically, but spiritually — during this holiday season?

Prayer:

Loving God, thank You for seasons of change and moments of pause. As the school holidays begin, help us to release the pressures we carry and to rest in You. Renew our strength, deepen our trust, and teach us to recognise Your presence in quieter days. May this time be one of restoration, joy, and grace. Amen.
