Summer’s Generous Heart
Reflecting on how God’s love is limitless and unreserved
Summer has a way of slowing us down—if we let it. The longer days, warmer air, and sheer abundance of life invite us to notice what is already being freely given. In this season, creation itself becomes a quiet preacher, pointing us toward the generous heart of God. Fields do not ration their colour, trees do not hold back their fruit, and light pours from the sky without asking who deserves it. So it is with God’s love: abundant, unearned, and joyfully given.
Scripture reminds us of this open-handed grace:
“He makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous.” (Matthew 5:45)
The sun is perhaps the most obvious summer teacher. Each morning it rises faithfully, warming gardens, streets, and skin alike. It does not discriminate. It does not wait for gratitude. It simply shines. God’s love is like that—constant and inclusive, surrounding us long before we think to ask, and remaining even when we forget to notice. We do not earn its warmth; we live because of it.
An Illustration
Imagine sitting in a park on a summer afternoon. Children play, someone reads on a bench, others simply lie on the grass. No one is producing anything. Yet life feels rich, full, and right. In that moment, the gift is not what we do, but that we are. God delights in us in much the same way—not because we are busy or useful, but because we are God’s beloved.
Summer also invites us to practice what might feel like a spiritual rebellion: “wasting time” with God. Stepping away from productivity and pressure, we learn the sacrament of the present moment. To enjoy creation, to rest, to linger in beauty—these are not indulgences but acts of trust. They say, “God’s love is enough, even when I am not striving.”
A Challenge
This week, set aside intentional “unproductive” time with God. Sit in the sun, walk slowly, notice colour and sound. Resist the urge to hurry. Let enjoyment itself become your prayer.

Generous God,
Thank you for a love that shines without condition.
Teach us to rest in your abundance,
to receive rather than strive,
and to trust that we are held, just as we are.
May this summer draw us deeper into your grace.
