Rivers in the Desert
Isaiah 43:19
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”
In recent years there has been growing hope that even the Sahara Desert might one day bloom. Projects like the Sahara Forest Project use seawater and sunlight to grow crops in arid land. In Mauritania, reforestation schemes powered by renewable energy aim to restore soil and livelihoods. The Great Green Wall seeks to heal millions of hectares across Africa. What once seemed impossible is now being patiently cultivated—life drawn from dryness.
Isaiah speaks into a similar landscape of despair. Writing to people shaped by loss and exile, God declares, “I am doing a new thing.” Not a repeat of the past, not a small improvement—but something unexpected. A road where there was no path. Rivers where only dust had settled. God’s promise is not to remove the wilderness, but to work within it.
Many of us know what a spiritual wilderness feels like: prayer that seems to echo back in silence, faith that feels thin, energy for discipleship dried up by disappointment or weariness. Isaiah 43 does not deny that reality. Instead, it invites us to watch for God’s quiet irrigation—often unnoticed at first, often slow, but deeply life-giving.
Irrigating a spiritual desert takes intention. Just as desert cultivation relies on careful systems, so the soul is nourished through simple, faithful practices: returning to Scripture even when it feels flat; praying honestly rather than eloquently; worshipping on borrowed faith; staying connected to Christian community. These are not dramatic acts, but steady channels through which God’s Spirit flows.

This week, imagine your life as a landscape. Where does it feel dry or overgrown with disappointment? On a piece of paper, sketch a desert scene and draw one small stream flowing through it. Write beside it one practice you will commit to for the coming week—perhaps five minutes of stillness, a psalm a day, or reaching out to a trusted friend. Watch for small signs of life.
Prayer
God of new beginnings,
when our faith feels parched and our hope runs low,
help us to trust your promise.
Open our eyes to the streams you are already forming,
and give us patience to tend the desert places of our lives.
Make us faithful in small practices,
until your rivers bring life again.
