All Are Welcome

At St Nicholas Methodist you will find a friendly welcome where we help each other to worship God, and strive to live more like Christ in service beyond the walls of our church building. We are part of the Exeter Coast and Country Circuit.

Daily Devotion

More Than Words

Scripture: "What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead." – James 2:14-17 (NIV)

Imagine a builder who draws up detailed plans for a house but never lays a single brick. The plans may be good, but they bring no shelter to those in need. In the same way, faith without action is like blueprints without a building – it has the potential to help, but remains ineffective until put into practice. Prayer and action work hand in hand, like two sides of the same coin.

Reflection

Lent calls us to live out our faith with purpose. It’s easy to pray for those in need, but James reminds us that true faith moves us to act. Whether we’re concerned for someone’s well-being, our community, or the world around us, our prayers should lead to practical help – because love is not just felt or spoken, but demonstrated.

Challenge for the Day

Think of someone you’ve been praying for recently. Today, take one practical step to support them – drop off groceries, send a helpful resource, offer to help with a task, or simply check in with them in person. Let your prayer guide your action and your action strengthen your prayer.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for teaching us that faith and action go hand in hand. Help us not to stop at praying for others, but to move with love and purpose to meet their needs. May our lives show your goodness in both word and deed. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
