God Will Show You His Mercy
Mercy is often misunderstood. We live in a world that prizes toughness, quick retaliation, and being seen to “win.” In that climate, mercy can look like weakness. Yet this is a deep misconception. True mercy requires inner strength, security, and courage. It takes far more power to restrain anger than to unleash it, far more confidence to forgive than to strike back.
Scripture reveals that mercy is not a soft option; it is at the very heart of God’s character. God is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in love. His mercy is His undeserved kindness towards us — the wellspring from which forgiveness, healing, and restoration flow. God does not show mercy because we earn it, but because He is merciful.
Mary understood this when she sang her great song of praise. In Luke 1:50 she declares, “His mercy is on those who fear Him, from generation to generation.” God’s mercy is not fleeting or selective. It stretches across time, offered faithfully to all who live in reverent trust and obedience. What God has been to one generation, He will be to the next — and to us today.
Fred Buechner beautifully captures this mystery: “Mercy is the patter of rain on the roof and the life sheltered by the walls. Justice is the grammar of things. Mercy is the poetry of things.” Justice gives structure, but mercy gives beauty. Mercy turns survival into shelter, existence into life.

Imagine a heavy storm outside. The rain lashes down relentlessly, yet inside the house there is warmth, light, and safety. Mercy is not the absence of the storm; it is the shelter that holds firm in the storm. God’s mercy does not deny life’s hardships, but it keeps us safe within them.
Challenge
This week, resist the urge to equate strength with harshness. Where can you choose mercy — in your words, your judgments, or your responses? Ask God to help you both receive His mercy and reflect it to others.
Prayer
Merciful God, thank You that Your compassion never runs dry. Shelter us under Your mercy when we face storms of guilt, fear, or anger. Give us the strength to live mercifully, as You have been merciful to us. Amen.
