Trusting the Flow
In today’s frenetic world, the advice is often given: “Just relax and go with the flow.” Usually, it means doing what everyone else is doing, choosing the path of least resistance, or avoiding difficult decisions. Sometimes that sounds appealing—especially when life feels overwhelming. But a deeper question remains: where is the flow actually taking us?
The writer of Proverbs offers a very different invitation:
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
(Proverbs 3:5–6, NIV)
This kind of trust is not passive drifting. It is an active, wholehearted decision to place our confidence in God rather than ourselves. “Trust in the LORD with all your heart” calls us to release our anxious grip on control and resist the illusion that we always know best. Our understanding is limited—shaped by emotion, habit, fear, and cultural pressure—yet God sees the whole picture.
To “lean not on your own understanding” doesn’t mean abandoning thought or wisdom; it means recognising their limits. Faith asks us to look beyond what seems easiest or most popular and to seek God’s perspective instead. And submitting to God “in all your ways” means inviting Him into every corner of life—daily routines, decisions, relationships, finances, and hopes—not just moments of crisis.
Illustration:
Imagine floating down a river on a strong current. Going with the flow requires no effort, but you have no say in where you end up. Trusting God, however, is more like walking a well-marked path with a trusted guide. It still takes effort and attentiveness, but it leads somewhere purposeful and safe.
The promise of Proverbs is not a life without bends or challenges, but a life guided. God “makes our paths straight”—directing us toward what is right, giving clarity when we are confused, and offering peace when the way feels uncertain.
Challenge:
Today, pause and ask: Where am I simply going with the flow? Identify one area where God is inviting you to trust Him more deliberately, and offer it to Him in prayer.
Prayer:
Loving God, I confess how easily I rely on my own understanding and follow the crowd. Teach me to trust You with all my heart. Guide my steps, straighten my paths, and help me rest in Your wisdom. In every part of my life, may I walk with You. Amen.
