Daily Devotions

 


Ephesians 3:20–21

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”

In this doxology Paul lifts our eyes to the immeasurable generosity of God. He reminds us that God’s power is not only greater than we can comprehend but is already at work within us. The language is expansive—immeasurably more, exceedingly abundantly, beyond all we ask or think. This is not just sufficiency, but overflowing abundance rooted in God’s glory and expressed through the life of the church.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer often reflected on this kind of generosity. For him, possessions were never to be hoarded but held as gifts entrusted by God. He emphasised the rhythm of receiving and giving, gratitude and sharing, always seeing earthly abundance as an opportunity for service. For Bonhoeffer, true wealth was not accumulation, but community—life lived together as a gift from God, transformed by His grace.

This vision of God’s abundance is echoed in the words Nelson Mandela quoted at his 1994 inauguration, drawing on Marianne Williamson’s writings:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant?’
Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world…
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It is not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.
As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Paul’s words and Williamson’s insight come together: God’s power at work in us is not limited to our imagination or effort. It is abundant, transformative, and meant to shine through us for the blessing of others.


Prayer

Eternal God,
open our eyes to see Your hand at work
in the splendour of creation
and in the beauty of human life.

Teach us to cherish the gifts that surround us,
to share our blessings with our sisters and brothers,
and to rejoice in the abundance of life in Your presence.

May the glory of Christ dwell richly in us,
so that through Your Spirit we may live boldly,
give generously, and shine with the light of Your love.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
