Rivers and Streams of Grace
Drawing Closer Through Creation and Rest
There is something quietly holy about sitting beside a babbling stream or watching a river flow on a warm summer’s day. The gentle sound, the cool air, the steady movement of water all seem to slow us down. Without asking anything of us, the river refreshes body and soul. It enlivens, invigorates, and restores.
The psalmist captures this beautifully in Psalm 46:4:
“There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.”
In a psalm written amid shaking mountains and roaring waters, this calm river stands in striking contrast. It represents the constant, life-giving presence of God among his people. While chaos rages outside the city, grace flows steadily within it.
Notice that this river is not a flash flood or a passing torrent. It is perennial—always there, always flowing. Its streams speak of the many ways God’s grace reaches us: peace in anxious moments, strength when we are weary, comfort when we are grieving, joy when hope feels thin. God’s grace is not rationed; it is generously distributed, flowing wherever it is needed most.
Jesus picked up this same imagery when he spoke of the Holy Spirit. In John 7, he promises that “rivers of living water” will flow from within those who come to him. Grace is not only something we receive; it becomes something that flows through us to others. Refreshed people become refreshing people.
Illustration:
Imagine a dry garden during a long summer drought. The soil hardens, plants wilt, and growth stalls. Then a small irrigation channel is opened, allowing water to flow gently but continuously. Almost unnoticed at first, life begins to return. Leaves lift, colour deepens, and growth resumes. God’s grace often works like that—not always dramatic, but quietly transformative when we allow it to flow.
Challenge:
This week, find a moment to pause near water—a river, stream, pond, or even a running tap. As you listen and watch, ask yourself: Where do I need God’s grace to refresh me right now? Then consider one small way you might let that grace flow onward to someone else.
Prayer:
Gracious God,
thank you for your never-ending river of grace.
When we are dry and weary, draw us to your refreshing presence.
Let your Spirit flow within us, restoring our hope and renewing our strength,
so that we may become channels of your love and peace to others. Amen.
