The Gift of Enough
Psalm 23:1 – “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.”
Have you ever paused to consider the gift of enough?
It’s a blessing when a believer can truly say, “I have enough.” Paul captures this in 1 Timothy 6:6: “Godliness with contentment is great gain.” Contentment is a treasure, yet it can be elusive.
- Saying I have enough is only truly possible when our hearts are rooted in eternal things. Contentment reflects an eternal perspective, not just the desire to feather an earthly nest.
- It is difficult because our culture constantly encourages discontent, making us believe we need more to be happy.
- And it’s difficult because our hearts are naturally drawn to desire beyond our needs.
Illustration:
Imagine a little child with a single slice of bread. At first, they glance around, wishing for more. Then, after a bite, they smile, savouring the taste. In that moment, they have enough. Like that child, contentment begins with gratitude for what we already hold.
The answer is spiritual contentment—a state of inner peace that comes from trusting God, detaching from endless desires, and focusing on the soul’s well-being over fleeting pleasures.
Prayer:
Lord, help me to embrace the gift of enough. Teach my heart to trust Your provision, to be content in all circumstances, and to find joy in Your presence above all else. Guard me from the endless chase of more, and root me in gratitude for all You have given. Amen.
Practice: Do one “unproductive” thing with God.
