Day 2 The Promise of Light
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5)
The Gospel of John opens not with a manger, but with eternity. “In the beginning was the Word…” Before the world turned, before sin entered, light was coming.
This is the hope of Advent: that even before the first candle is lit, before the dawn breaks, God has already begun His rescue plan. Darkness does not have the first word—and it certainly will not have the last.
The world is still full of shadows. But this passage reminds us that the light of Christ is not fragile. It shines on through fear, through failure, through loss. It shines in hospital rooms and conflict zones, in lonely hearts and weary prayers. And John declares with assurance: “The darkness has not overcome it.”
Light doesn't need to shout. It simply shines.
Even a small flame pushes back a roomful of dark.
Jesus, the Light of the World, shines into every corner—even the ones we try to hide.
This is the promise of Christmas: God with us, God for us, God shining in us.
Sailors caught in a violent storm may lose sight of land—but far off, they spot the steady flash of a lighthouse. It doesn’t remove the waves, but it gives them something to steer toward.
Light brings direction. Light brings hope.
So it is with Christ. He doesn't always still the storm immediately, but His light remains—faithful, unwavering, guiding us safely home.
Jesus, Light of the world, shine in me. Chase away the shadows of fear, doubt, and sorrow. Fill every hidden place in my heart with your hope. Let your light guide my steps today. Amen.
