Sayings

The saying ‘Kiss of death' is commonly defined as  an action or relationship that is ultimately ruinous. This term alludes to the betrayal of Jesus by Judas Iscariot, who kissed him as a way of identifying him to the soldiers who came to arrest him (Matthew 26: 47–49) “While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him.”

Perhaps the most important lesson to learn from this incident is not the action of Judas, the reaction or should that be the non-reaction  of Jesus. He did not refuse the treacherous kiss. One commentator put it this way, “He suffered His sacred Face to be touched by the lips of this vile traitor, and He even called him: "Friend!" We read "Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.",

This loving treatment on the part of our Lord to the ungrateful traitor is the mark grace. We could deduce that Jesus gave Judas to understand that He still loved him in spite of his vile crime, and was ready to forgive him.

For me, this clearly shows that Jesus was never dropped his guard and always lived out his own teaching. You recall that Jesus said “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbour and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:43-45)

Perhaps we need to ask as we consider this scene, where do I stand, Lord, in face of your invitation to become godlike in my kindliness? When I am struggling to survive in a hostile world, trying to care for a family, and earn my living, how do I keep my heart free of annoyances, resentments, even hatreds? Only by keeping my eyes on you, and being patient with my falls from grace. Amen
