John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is expedient for you that I go away, for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send Him unto you.
The Lord knew how the disciples were with one another. As with us all, we find it so hard to say Goodbye. Often, our last words always carry the promise of further meeting: See you; au revoir, auf wiedersehen; a reviderci. In these goodbyes to our friends, we are holding a promise, of a meeting again.
Jesus knew there was a new world ahead for the disciples - the world of the Spirit who will speak within them, deepening their convictions and their love of God in Jesus. The Spirit of truth is not tied to time or space but in all times inspires the desire to live by truth and follow the Lord Jesus. Yet the disciples still had difficulty in perceiving the truth of such a promise.
For us, there is so much commentary on television or radio, on the internet and in print; there are many opinions, judgements and values. As we approach the Ascension we need some time to take to heart Jesus' assurance that only the Holy Spirit brings a true understanding of his purpose for us. Jesus answered the question that disciples did not ask and sometimes my spoken prayers seem not to be answered as Jesus addresses the questions that may be deeper in my heart.
As we look at our lives, may we pray for the grace of the Holy Spirit to shed light, to bring truth and to be the consolation that Jesus promises. For Jesus has the good of all disciples at heart; his presence, his words and his departing are all for our good.

Dear heavenly Lord, The world demands results, and my own flesh seeks action. Help me Lord, in this time of waiting. No matter what happens, no matter how things turn out, May your Spirit remind me that I already have all I need. Calm my fears and anxieties and let me rest in you.
l am your child. You save my soul. You give me life everlasting. Show me that my peace comes from you.
Let me be patient and still in your presence. And during this time of wait, build my faith; strengthen my character; reveal to my heart how much I truly depend upon you. So whatever may come, I'm ready to keep praising you, to glorify you and to serve you obediently. Show me waiting for you is loving you. You alone are my hope and salvation. May your will be done.
In Jesus name, I pray, Amen.
