Covenant thoughts

And now, glorious and blessed God,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
you are mine and I am yours. So be it.
And the covenant now made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven.'

In the final part of the covenant prayer we are in the area of Jesus prayer in John 17 where he says,

“I’m praying not only for them
But also for those who will believe in me
Because of them and their witness about me.
The goal is for all of them to become one heart and mind—
Just as you, Father, are in me and I in you,
So they might be one heart and mind with us.
Then the world might believe that you,

in fact, sent me.
The same glory you gave me, I gave them,
So they’ll be as unified and together as we are—
I in them and you in me.
Then they’ll be mature in this oneness,
And give the godless world evidence
That you’ve sent me and loved them
In the same way you’ve loved me.”

We are the ones called into this oneness through the words handed down by the disciples. Here Jesus speaks of us, he prays for us, that we may be one with him and with his Father. Jesus wants us to be drawn into the life he shares with his Father.

Jesus draws us into life so that we may give witness to Him.  What Jesus asks for us is what he sought for himself: unity with God. Jesus wants his disciples to live in such a way that the work of God is evident in them.  As we make our covenant prayer we need to think of how we live and we need to name the help we need.

Lord Jesus Christ, you are the light of the world, the light of life. I pray that, as I make these commitments, I will be drawn ever closer to you and receive your light, so that, as I walk with you I will follow your light, and reflect your light to all around me, to the honour of your Name. Amen.
