Pointing to the Light

A former college student recalls how he lived abroad for a year in Germany. As a foreign student he always had Fridays off so that he could travel around Europe on the Eurail pass. One weekend he travelled to the popular backpacker city of Interlaken, Switzerland, and having just checked in to his hostel, happened to meet some fellow college students from Wisconsin. He recalls that there was a woman in the group with whom he began a conversation. It became clear that there was something special about her.

Not her looks or her intellect, but rather, something like an inner radiance. But what was fascinating was, after returning to his room, he was chatting with one of the friends who had  also met the young woman and somehow, this woman came up in their conversation, and both had the same impression. There was something about her, she was their age, a peer, who made them feel a sense of comfort in her presence. Somehow later they discovered she was, as  suspected, a faithful Christian. Looking back, he would say it was the Holy Spirit emanating from her, showing him an inner light that was so impressionable he remember it to this day, some twenty years later.”

Which person of inner light impresses you? In 2 Corinthians 4:6 we read, “For God, who said, “Let there be light in the darkness,” has made us understand that it is the brightness of his glory that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.”

Our lives can reflect the light of Jesus much like the moon reflects the sun. The moon is not a source of light, it only reflects light from the sun. In the same way, Jesus is the only source of truth and light in our lives. All other things are just a reflection of Him.

If you feel inadequate to shine God’s light, consider these words, “God knows the mess we’re in when He calls us. His light shines greater through ‘cracked pots’ than it does through those who have it all together.”

Jesus, thank you for showing me the way out of the darkness. Thank you that you are the light of the world and I can be too. Fill me with your light so I can radiate your presence wherever I go. Amen.
