"A great and effective door has been opened to me, and there are many who oppose me."
— 1 Corinthians 16:9
In this verse, Paul speaks with both clarity and confidence from Ephesus, where he faces an open door of opportunity paired with opposition. He describes the door as “great and effective”—not just wide, but overflowing with potential. It’s a powerful reminder that often, the doors God opens lead us into places of spiritual conflict and testing.
We tend to think that a clear path will also be an easy one. But Paul turns that assumption on its head. Sometimes, the most fruitful work for the kingdom is the most contested. A door from God doesn’t promise ease—it promises purpose, and that purpose often involves struggle.
The word “effective” speaks to more than just potential—it speaks of power. It’s an invitation to engage in work that matters, that changes lives, and that bears fruit for the kingdom. But such impact often attracts resistance—whether spiritual, personal, or circumstantial.
I’m reminded of an old practice from the days of shipbuilding: When shipbuilders needed a mast, they didn’t simply choose any tree. They selected the strongest and straightest one, then cleared away the surrounding forest. Alone and exposed to the elements, the tree would endure harsh winds and storms, growing stronger in the process. Only then was it ready to be shaped into a mast, able to withstand the rough seas and carry a full sail.
In the same way, we too are shaped by the challenges we face.
When we are rooted in Christ, the storms that rise against us don’t break us—they strengthen us. We become better prepared to serve faithfully, love fully, and stand firm in the work God has called us to.
An open door may lead into a storm, but that’s where growth happens. Step through it anyway. That’s where God strengthens you.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the doors of opportunity and purpose You place before me, just as You did for Paul. Help me to recognize those doors—not only by the promises they hold but by the challenges they bring. Give me the courage to walk through them in faith, and the strength to remain faithful when opposition comes. Make me like the wind-battered tree—rooted, resilient, and ready to fulfill Your call. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
